Vinyl Pressing Review

Reviewed by Rob Peoni on 06.26.2013

A full-throttle, aural attack celebrating the tenets of metal with a southern-fried twist. Veteran musicianship is the calling card of the sixth release from this Austin, TX trio, which features JD Pinkus (Butthole Surfers) leading the charge on bass and vocals.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

I can't say enough about the production quality of this release. Too often with metal, bands are reduced to an ear drum-shattering wall of noise. The vocals are out front. The bass and guitars are crisp. It's a loud record, but it's easy to follow Honky down its various paths of traditional metal and southern rock psychedelia. It sounds like Austin, TX on this record - just as it should.

Pressing Quality:

No noticeable warp and weave. No manufacturing flaws. The paper sleeve is durable. The vinyl pressing is strong.

Vinyl Noise:

Not a very noisy pressing. No static between tracks. The music is up front. Whomever is responsible for the mix deserves a hefty pat on the back. Each instrument is provided the opportunity to shine at various points throughout the release without any interference.

Overall Artwork:

I felt like the graphic design was a little generic. The center label looks like an odomoter, which fits with the highway theme of the packaging. The road sign is representative of the band's Texas roots, but it's nothing to get excited about.

Overall Extras:

Blue vinyl. Download card. Not much beyond that.
