Vinyl Pressing Review

Bad Credit No Credit

The Whole Buffalo

One moment you're shuffling to a New Orleans second line, the next you're trapped inside a carnival side show on this experimental LP driven by the other-worldly vocals and saxophone play of front woman Carrie-Anne Murphy. This album is a roller coaster ride that will prove too much to tolerate for the passive listener, but it's nothing if not interesting.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

A hefty pat on the back is due to the sound engineer that was forced to make sense of Murphy's vocal arrangements. Nothing is lost in the mix, despite the cacophony of competing horns and vocals. The avant garde experimentation never quits, but the madness is easy to parse through thanks to the high-quality production.

Pressing Quality:

High quality, durable purple vinyl. The mix is high quality, with Murphy's energetic, warbling vocals at the forefront. The high gloss paper sleeve is a nice touch. There is a bit of static (see vinyl noise) but no warp, weave or other manufacturing flaws are present.

Vinyl Noise:

There is a bit of static throughout the album, but it's never overwhelming. The music is loud and overshadows the minimal crackling. No noticeable popping or skipping, even between tracks.

Overall Artwork:

The cover art features a hand-drawn buffalo comprised of every type of junk food imaginable: pizza, soda, chips, burgers, hot dogs, pretzels, etc. The jacket is standard issue, but the sleeve is made of high gloss, durable paper and features the album lyrics along with liner notes and some additional junk food-centric artwork. The slogan "Free Pussy Riot" is etched near the center of the album, a touch which I appreciated.

Overall Extras:

The purple vinyl is attractive. The LP includes a digital download code. The sleeve with hand-written liner notes is a very nice added bonus.
