The Turtles

It Ain't Me Babe

Reviewed by Rob Peoni on 08.14.2013

The debut LP from penultimate 1960s popsmiths The Turtles receives a reissue treatment on pristine, 180 gram vinyl. Reissued in mono, the LP features a handful of originals alongside a stellar batch of covers from Bob Dylan, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, and P.F. Sloan. 'It Ain't Me Babe' showcases The Turtles undeniable strength as vocalists and musicians.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

Even as teenagers, The Turtles craftsmanship in terms of vocal arrangements is front and center on this debut. The guitars are jangly and bright. The vocals are up front. The rhythms are crisp and tight. The bass is warm and resounding. Nothing gets lost in the mix.

Pressing Quality:

The 180 gram vinyl is beautiful, heavy and durable. The paper sleeve and jacket are standard issue, but an accurate recreation of the original. No warping, weaving, inner groove distortion or other manufacturing flaws are present. The volume remains consistent throughout.

Vinyl Noise:

Very quiet pressing, even between tracks. No noticeable static, skipping, popping. A near-flawless pressing.

Overall Artwork:

The cover art stays true to the original, with the fresh-faced band offering stoic, deadpan stares from some kind of cellar construction site. The back cover features a black and white photograph of the band standing and sitting atop a loading dock with a brief description of the album's contents beneath.

Overall Extras:

No extras to speak of beyond the 180 gram pressing.
