The Turtles

Happy Together

Reviewed by Rob Peoni on 08.14.2013

Reissued on pristine, 180 gram vinyl, The Turtles 1967, Top-25 LP 'Happy Together' is available in all of its airbrushed pop perfection. Often written off as producers of hackneyed, mindless drivel, a second look at the group's masterfully crafted vocal arrangements and precise instrumentation offers a glimpse of seriously talented musicians at the pinnacle of their collective relevance.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

The mix on this record is nothing short of terrific. The Turtles's pitch-perfect vocal arrangements are as apparent as ever. The drums are out front in the mix, showcasing the jazz training of the band's then new drummer Johnny Barbata. The string arrangements are lush and warm. The horn lines are bright, crisp and effervescent, without overpowering the vocals.

Pressing Quality:

The 180 gram vinyl is immaculate. No warping, weaving, or manufacturing flaws of any kind. The paper sleeve and jacket are standard issue, but serve as an accurate reproduction of the original release.

Vinyl Noise:

Very quiet pressing. No noticeable skipping, popping or static present.

Overall Artwork:

The cover art stays true to the original with The Turtles presented lounging and grinning in colorful seaters, while two seated rows of stern, sunglassed onlookers watch from the background. No additional artwork to speak of.

Overall Extras:

No extras aside from the 180 gram vinyl.
