Vinyl Pressing Review

Angel Olsen

Strange Cacti EP

Reviewed by Rob Peoni on 08.23.2013

Originally released on cassette in 2010 and vinyl in 2011, this is the second edition pressing of Chicago singer-songwriter Angel Olsen's debut EP. The rawness of the original lo-fi recordings transfers well to wax. For those that hopped on the bandwagon after 2012's 'Halfway Home', I figured this would be useful review. The album plays at 45 RPM.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

Olsen's vocals are drenched in echo. She sounds as if she's singing from the bottom of a cistern. This adds a haunted quality to her stunning vocal prowess. The guitars are lush, but not particularly crisp. Aside from the echo, the production is minimalist and devoid of any frills.

Pressing Quality:

The vinyl feels thick and durable, though not particularly heavy. The paper sleeve and jacket are both standard issue. There is quite a bit of noise on this pressing, but no warping, weaving, skipping or other of manufacturing flaws are present.

Vinyl Noise:

There's a fairly significant amount of noise on this pressing. There is some minor static throughout. It also has the occasional pop. The noise feels at home with the lo-fi recordings, but doesn't add anything to the listening experience.

Overall Artwork:

The artwork matches the album's minimalist aesthetic. The front cover features a black and white vignette of Olsen's face displaying a half-smile. Her image is surrounded by all black. The rear cover is in all white with a track listing, the artist's name and the title of the EP.

Overall Extras:

The EP includes a digital download. No other extras to speak of.
