Vinyl Pressing Review

Dent May

Mississippi's resident synth pop savant, Dent May, returns on Paw Tracks to release his third LP in the last five years. He picks up where he left off on 'Do Things' with otherworldly synth lines, danceable backbeats and playful lyrics. This record may not prove as cerebral as the latest folk rock release, but its dry wit, cohesive arrangements, and drowsy three-part harmonies solidify May's position as one of the premier popsmiths of the last few years.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

All songs on this LP were written, produced and performed by Dent May. Therefore there is a singular aesthetic and coherent sound present throughout the release. The pressing captures May's Beach Boysesque harmonies and spacey synthesizers, while adding a warmth and richness to the albums lower end and rhythms. The drums could be a touch more prominent in the mix, but the instrumentation is lush and nothing gets lost.

Pressing Quality:

Very nice pressing overrall. Beautiful packaging. The blue / clear swirl vinyl is unlike any other colored vinyl in my collection. The vinyl feels as heavy and sturdy as it is beautiful. No warping, weaving, or other manufacturing flaws present. The volume remains consistent throughout playback. Aside from some minimal static, I have zero complaints.

Vinyl Noise:

There was some minimal static on the first and third tracks of the b-side of my record. Other than that, it was a very quiet release, even between tracks. No popping, skipping or other ambient noise present.

Overall Artwork:

The cover art and limited edition poster feature a black and white photograph of Dent May sitting serenely in a bubble bath. The heavy card stock insert features a kind of distorted collage of the woods on one side, with hand-written album credits and thank yous on the other.

Overall Extras:

The limited edition copy includes a digital download card, a poster of the cover-art featuring Dent May in a bubble bath, 1 oz. bottle of custom liquid bubble bath solution (yes, you read that right), and a high quality card stock sleeve with additional artwork. The clear/blue swirled vinyl is unlike any in my collection.
