Vinyl Pressing Review

Raya Brass Band

This Train Is Now

Reviewed by Rob Peoni on 11.04.2013

Raya Brass Band up globally-informed dance grooves on their third album. The NYC outfit relies on relentless horns and accessible rhythms that coalesce in a raucous, Balkan dance party. These songs would feel at home in an impromptu jam session in the street or a sophisticated jazz club.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

9.00

Each of Raya Brass Band's five members composed at least one of the eight tracks that comprise this LP. As a result, the album takes on a variety of personalities without ever losing focus. The production is immaculate and balanced. Each horn given adequate space and attention. The rhythms pop and set the pace without ever overwhelming the pitch perfect brass. The arrangements are lively and danceable.

Pressing Quality:

7.50

The jacket had some significant creasing on the corners of our copy. This was likely the result of shipping. The paper sleeve is standard issue. However, this LP has it where it counts: the black vinyl feels heavy and durable. No warping, weaving, inner groove distortion or other manufacturing flaws present. The volume remains consistent throughout.

Vinyl Noise:

8.00

There is some minor static that never distracts but is noticeable between tracks. No popping, skipping or other noise present.

Overall Artwork:

7.50

The front cover has an art deco look to it with a train that looks like a perspective assignment from a talented art school student. The design is simple but effective. The rear cover carries over the multicolor train track theme for the track listing. No artwork on the sleeve or additional artwork to speak of.

Overall Extras:

7.50

The album includes a digital download with three additional bonus tracks. No other extras to speak of.
