Vinyl Pressing Review

Robyn Hitchcock

I Wanna Go Backwards

Reviewed by Finn Swingley on 02.22.2009

Robyn Hitchcock's first three albums repackaged with five full LPs of bonus material. Hitchcock's talent and whimsy are on full display here, and 90% of the unreleased bonus material is good to great. However, while I admire Yep Roc for going the extra mile and putting this out on vinyl, issues with the pressing and the digital download lead me to recommend that buyers purchase the less expensive 5 cd box, which I gather also comes with track by track liner notes not included in the vinyl box or the digital downlaod.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

7.50

Since a big portion of this box set are demos, not all of the sound quality is super great, but it's lovingly put together and the original records sound as good as always.

Pressing Quality:

6.00

There are several things I am frustrated about with this box set. The lack of inclusion of CD liner notes,. The inner sleeves are too small for the records and several have already split down the side and some issues with noise are a bit disappointing. It's listenable for sure, but not the high quality I would have hoped for in a $100 box set.

Vinyl Noise:

4.00

Somewhat noisy pressing, both between tracks and sometimes during songs.

Overall Artwork:

6.00

The included original color sketches by Robyn on the inner sleeves is nice. Also included is an autographed poster.

Overall Extras:

5.00

album comes with a digital download (though, it is only good through October 2008). However, because of the size of the file, I had so many issues trying to get the download to work, that I eventually strait up gave up. I burned myself a CD-R with my favorite songs from the bonus albums and called it a day.
