Outstanding debut album from this "super group" consisting of John McCauley (Deer Tick), Matthew Vasquez (Delta Spirit), and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes). The songs are at least as strong as anything by the members' other projects, and the vinyl itself sounds great. Minimal packaging, high sonic quality - first run of 1000 copies should be pretty valuable in the coming years. Middle Brother definitely seem headed for greatness: excellent vocal harmonies, top-notch musicianship, and a refreshing stripped-down country-tinged sound. There are even a few high-energy rock tunes and a fitting cover of Paul Westerberg's "Portland".

Overall Sound: |
9.00 |
| Mixing and mastering are basically flawless. Balanced and clean, with just the right amount of sonic edginess to sound like classic country-rock. A big but intimate sound that brings out the strength of the songwriting (think the Band's "Music From Big Pink" or Wilco's "Being There). | |
Pressing Quality: |
8.50 |
| Slight wobble around the outer edge of the vinyl, but does not effect the sound quality. Very good, especially for a non-audiophile quality pressing. Full sound with just the right amount of bass for a vinyl record. | |
Vinyl Noise: |
8.00 |
| Almost perfect except for a couple of minor pops on one song ("Theater"). No noticeable distortion or other surface noise. | |
Overall Artwork: |
7.50 |
| Simple photo of the band on the cover, handwritten text, lots of black with a little white. A bit more punk looking than the actual contents; the look is somewhere between "perfectly minimal" and "low-budget." | |
Overall Extras: |
7.00 |
| Glossy gatefold insert with lyrics, same black-and-white look as artwork. Paper sleeve is ok. The thick plastic digital download card is a nice touch. Nothing too ornamental, but good packaging. | |
