Vinyl Pressing Review

Alex Chilton

Free Again: The 1970 Sessions

Reviewed by Jon Rogers on 01.12.2012

Recorded in the period between Chilton's work in The Box Tops and Big Star, this record is a rather inconsistent collection of Alex Chilton songs previously issued as "1970". This is doubtlessly a very special release for Chilton enthusiasts, and the vinyl features an attractive presentation (first 1000 copies are on clear vinyl). Definitely a collector's item. However, the CD version includes more extras (liner notes, bonus tracks) and may be more worthwhile for completists. Also note that the vinyl does not include a download, so the extra tracks have to be purchased in one of the other formats.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

8.50

Good sound for the most part; a little inconsistent due to being a collection of different recording sessions. Some songs still have a rather unpolished feel, but that's not exactly a bad thing.

Pressing Quality:

8.00

Good pressing quality on smoky-looking clear vinyl. Record looks good, sounds decent, and has no major problems

Vinyl Noise:

7.00

A little bit of surface noise in places, mostly little crackles between songs or on quieter songs. Nothing too serious; still worthwhile for diehard vinyl collectors.

Overall Artwork:

7.00

Not bad, features pictures of a young Alex Chilton, but not even from the era when these recordings were made (as apparently there are no photos from this period). Design is simple and high-quality, as can be expected from Omnivore, but a bit more to look at might have been nice.

Overall Extras:

2.50

Not much really. Considering the price, collectors might want a bit more from this type of package. Minimal liner notes on the vinyl edition, no digital download, and none of the bonus tracks that are on the CD or digital versions.
