Vinyl Pressing Review

The Whitefield Brothers

Earthology

Reviewed by Jon Rogers on 01.26.2012

World psych-funk masterpiece by some mega-tasteful funk experts from Munich, The Whitefield Brothers, who earned their cred on their 2001 debut, In The Raw. This group spent some years masquerading as "lost classic" funk, and it's easy to see how they got away with it. They clearly know their stuff, and Earthology proves it: it combines sounds from all over the world, from many eras of soul, funk, and African music. Includes guest spots by rappers like Edan and Mr. Lif and musicians from bands like Antibalas and the Dap-Kings. A great purchase for funk/soul collectors and enthusiasts of all things related to Stones Throw. A great LP on all fronts.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

9.50

Overall sound is incredibly clean and balanced. The music is played well and the sound of a high-quality vinyl pressing helps give it a timeless feel, like it could have come out any time in the last 50 years. The music is loud and balanced, with some excellent low end to compliment The Whitefield Brothers' funk obsession.

Pressing Quality:

8.50

Good quality pressing, no major issues. 2nd LP had a slight warp along the outer edge, but it didn't effect the sound. Could only possibly sound better on heavyweight vinyl.

Vinyl Noise:

9.00

Just the right amount of fuzziness in the production to make the songs sound older. Almost no surface noise or other issues. Clear, upfront sound.

Overall Artwork:

9.00

A very authentic, exotic, and vintage-looking package. Full-color gatefold sleeve on thick cardboard. Excellent design from the cover to the actual labels on the records. The global, retro look fits the music extremely well.

Overall Extras:

7.50

No download card or other extras, but the music and packaging alone make this a special release for collectors, destined to become a classic of world psych-funk.
