Vinyl Pressing Review

John Maus

We Must Become The Pitiless Censors of Ourselves

Reviewed by Jon Rogers on 01.30.2012

This dark electronic masterpiece of new wave-influenced art pop was one of 2011's best kept secrets, and the beautiful pressing on Ribbon Music is a strong testament to the great music it contains. The package has several selling points, including heavyweight vinyl with good sound quality, a download card, and great design. Limited edition first pressing is hand-numbered. And Maus definitely seems to be gaining new listeners all the time, so this one could be worth something.

Ratings are based on a scale from 0-10.

Overall Sound:

7.50

Production-wise, the album is intentionally cloudy and mysterious, with a somewhat lo-fi aesthetic. The synth-drenched, 80s-influenced atmosphere is perfect for what Maus has intended, but the intentional murkiness could turn off some listeners.

Pressing Quality:

8.00

Very high-quality pressing on heavyweight vinyl. A slight weave and wobble were present, but caused no playing problems. No other noticeable manufacturing flaws or other issues. The heavyweight vinyl is a nice touch, and helps add to the depth of the music.

Vinyl Noise:

7.50

Some noise - little surface pops and crackles - is noticeable throughout the record, but wasn't especially severe or distracting (actually, almost fitting for this type of music). For the most part, a good pressing with loud, balanced mastering and production.

Overall Artwork:

9.50

Awesome looking package on thick, gatefold sleeve. The minimal art and design adds a layer of mystery with its dark blue, foggy motif.

Overall Extras:

9.00

Comes with a download card. Limited first-edition pressing is hand-numbered and comes in a great package. Heavyweight vinyl, good visual layout, and plastic inner sleeves are also great extras.
